ALL-TIME TOP 100s: Catchers

Today, I will be starting a new series of postings. Frequently, I have asked readers to give me ideas for topics and also that if they want to do some research and write something up, that I would be happy to consider posting it for them. Well, in recent weeks, Justin Ahern has done a lot of research on a topic that he was curious about, and that I found very interesting. So basically, he did the research, plugged in the numbers and came up with lists for the Top 100 players at each position in major league history.

So, thank you very much to Justin Ahern. The topic is very interesting and for him to do so much work and number crunching really helps me out a LOT! So, thank you!

If you have any questions for me, or if you have any questions for Justin, please e-mail me and I will be sure to forward your thoughts to him.

BACKGROUND AND PROCESS

Now, Justin noted that Bill James completed a project to rank the players by positions using Win Shares and other numbers. Here are the six categories that Bill James used to determine his ranking:

1.) Win Shares - Career Totals

2.) Win Shares - Top 3 seasons

3.) Win Shares - Top 5 consecutive seasons

4.) Win Shares - per 162 games played

5.) A Time Line Adjustment (points based on player's year of birth)

6.) Subjective Rating

When Justin did his research, he used each of the above criteria, except for the Subjective Rating because "if I wanted to do a subjective rating, I wouldn't have spent all of this time crunching numbers. People can do their own subjective rating. I just wanted to see what the numbers said." Justin pointed out to me that he thought that defensive players like Ozzie Smith and Bill Mazeroski were players hurt most by not including the subjective rating. This does make sense, and yet, I feel it important to point out the defense is included in Win Shares, so that does factor into this still.

I really like the way this is done. I think that career totals are important because it shows productivity over the entire career, longevity. We are also able to judge by their best years, how good they were at their best. The Top 5 consecutive seasons shows an extended period of peak performance. The "per 162 game" category adjusts for things like time missed for injury, etc. And finally, the Time Line question is one that I asked Justin about as well. He said, and I completely agree, that hitting is much tougher now than it was at any prior time in history. Win Shares does factor in the player's era. Now, this is not a big category, so it's effect on the overall score is minimal in comparison to the other categories.

Another thing that I like about Justin's research is that he chose to "normalize" each category. He explains:

I "normalized" all of the categories to a max score of 50. The way that James did the rating is that whatever they guy got in that category, that was his score. He did no normalizing. Babe Ruth accumulated 756 win shares in his career. That is the highest total ever. For this he received 37 points in James's system. In Will Clark's 3 best seasons he accumulated 44, 37, and 34 win shares so in James's ratings he got 38 points for that. Why should Clark get more credit for 3 great seasons that Ruth gets for having the greatest win share total ever? I don't think he should and that's why I normalized them. Ruth now gets 50 points for his 756 career win shares and Clark now gets 36 points for his 3 season run. I think that is a fairer way to evaluate them. Ruth had the most career win shares, the best score for top 3, and the top win shares per 162 games played. He gets a 50 in all 3 categories and every other player gets rated against Ruth's scores in those categories. Honus Wagner had the best 5 year stretch so he gets the 50 point score in that category and everybody else is evaluated against Wagner. I used the same time line adjustment that James used. I saw no need to change it.

So, there you have it, the criteria of this analysis. Again, I find it very interesting to see how Justin's analysis rates the players. I was very interested in seeing how current players rated in comparison to the old-timers. My plan with this series of postings is to post a position a day at least four days a week for the next couple of weeks. At the end of this analysis, we will list out the Top 200 players of all-time, regardless of position. I will post the Top 100 in order and only give their total points combining Justin's five categories (With four categories where the top score is 50, and the age category, where the highest "score" was 17.9, the highest possible score a player can get is 217.9.) You will notice in some cases that we have actually ranked a few more than 100. Justin wanted to plug in the numbers of players like Joe Mauer, Shannon Stewart, David Ortiz, and Doug Mientkiewicz and others to see how far they are from hitting the Top 100.

For each position, I have asked Justin to give me some thoughts on what he found interesting about the rankings. Maybe there was a player that surprised him with how high or low he ranked. Maybe there was a name that he didn't know well.  I will do a quick summary of my thoughts on the same types of things, and maybe do a little research on a couple of the players that I know very little about. Might as well make this a learning experience too, right?

With no further ado, let's get to the analysis:

Justin's Thoughts:

I think that Posada and Kendall point out the lack of great catchers that there have been in baseball history. Part of it could be attributed to catcher's careers being so short that they don't get a chance to accumulate great numbers. I think that Joe Torre is overrated in this system, too. He put up monster numbers when he was no longer a catcher.

Seth's Thoughts:

There are a lot of Yankees in the Top 20! I think that Yogi Berra is very underrated as a player because of his funny quotes, but this shows just how good he really was! And to think that he and Elston Howard were frequently on the same roster. Bill Dickey is a Hall of Famer. How far up this list could Thurmon Munson have been if not for his unfortunate death. How far up the list could Jorge Posada go?

I'm not surprised that Mike Piazza is #1 on the list. I am surprised that Ivan Rodriguez is way down at #12! Other names that surprised me were:
Higher than I thought: Gene Tenace, Darren Daulton, Mickey Tettleton, Tim McCarver.

No one really ranks any lower than I would have thought. I guess that I just think that catcher is really a pretty weak position. The top 10-12 are pretty good, but after that, there is a huge drop off.

Twins rankings:

#32 - Earl Battey (Twins 1961-1967)

#38 - John Roseboro (Twins 1968-1969)

#39 - Terry Steinbach (Twins 1997-1999)

#55 - Butch Wynegar (Twins 1976-1982)

#62 - AJ Pierzynski  (Twins 1998-2003)

#90 - Brian Harper (Twins 1988-1993)

Brian Harper had five very decent, high average, low power seasons with the Twins, but that was really the extent of his big league success. He was very good, but that he would fit onto this list tells you how weak the position is. AJ has been a very good offensive player for a few years now, but his #62 ranking of all-time also shows that. He is still very young, so think of how far up this list he could go. I would guess above any of the others on this Twins list.

Summary:

Overall as you can see, the catcher position has been a weak offensive position. As I mentioned, I think the top 10-12 on this list are great hitters and worthy of their rankings. But throughout baseball history, catcher has not been an offensive position. It has been a position where defense is what gets noticed. An ability to receive the ball well, call a good, smart game, lead a pitching staff and throw out base stealers are the things that make a good catcher.

A report like this probably is not fair to the catcher position, and yet, the players still deserve mention. It will be more interesting to see how the rankings go at other positions, which we will start next week.

Do you have any thoughts on these catcher ratings? Do you have any questions for myself or for Justin Ahern on this ranking or how this was comprised? If you have any thoughts, please e-mail me, and be sure to check back in the coming weeks for the rest of the positions.

ALL-TIME TOP 100s: First Base

Good Tuesday morning! I should start by saying that I had a nice three-day weekend and was out of town until late last night. The extra day off is always nice and seemingly always needed! The only tough part is coming back to work on that fourth day.

First things first, I have to point out what I would consider the most impressive stat line of the weekend. It comes from a Division III football game on Saturday. Gustavus 40, Carleton 27. OK, now first I have to admit a little nepotism, the stat line of the weekend happens to have been put in by my cousin, Isaac Sieling, a senior linebacker for the Gusties, but just check out these numbers and you decide if it deserves mention. On the game, he had 17 tackles (which increased his D III leading total to 148, a Gustavus single-season record). He also had 3 sacks (resulting in 19 lost yards). He recovered a fumble and also intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards. Now, I need everyone to click here and check out the "What do You Think?" question, which is "What was the biggest story of the 2004 Fall Athletic Season?" One option is "Isaac Sieling leading the nation in tackles." Let's see if we can help him win that!! Here are a couple of more articles. First from College Sporting News. Also, from the MIAC, which named him the defensive player of the week.

Next up, yesterday, Bobby Crosby was named the AL Rookie of the Year and Jason Bay won the NL Rookie of the Year Award. If you take a look back at my postseason award choices, I got both of these two right! Today, the NL Cy Young Award will be named. My choice was Diamondbacks lefty Randy Johnson, but because of his W-L record, the vote could be close with Roger Clemens and Roy Oswalt, both of the Astros getting a lot of votes. Jason Schmidt and Jake Peavy also deserve to have their names mentioned!

Today, I am going to touch on just a few topics from football to baseball and maybe more. The main topic will be continuing the All-Time Top 100 series that Justin Ahern researched for us. If you would like some background on the process used to develop this report and ranking, please click here.

If you have any questions for me, or if you have any questions for Justin, please e-mail me, and I will be sure to forward your thoughts to him.

THE FIRST BASEMEN

Here are the Top 100 First Basemen of All-Time. I think that the best part about this is just seeing the rankings and then being able to debate them! I mean, maybe you think so-and-so is ranked too high, or maybe this player is better than this player was. Hopefully you are able to think about some names of players you hadn't for awhile and this is fun!

Justin's Thoughts:

The first thing that grabbed my attention after I rated the first basemen was how well the active and recently retired players fared in the ratings. I think that is due in large part to the fact that defense was much more highly valued at the position a long time ago than it is now. Now first base is treated like a DH in the National League while it is used as a second DH in the American League. That wasn't always the case. There were guys who had long careers as regular first basemen who weren't better than league average hitters, but kept their position. That would never happen today. The Twins just got rid of a guy who fits that description. Guys like Hal Chase, Charlie Grimm, Deron Johnson, Joe Pepitone, Wes Parker, Bill Buckner, and Chris Chambliss all were regular starting first basemen for years despite not being good hitters. I don't know why it took managers so long to figure out that a good hit/bad glove first baseman is more valuable than a no hit/slick fielding one. Babe Ruth never played first base. I know that Gehrig was there, but Gehrig had to be a better outfielder than Ruth was in the 1930's. Ruth was a big fat guy who couldn't run by the 1930's yet he never played first. It was understood by at least some managers as many older players who could hit, but could no longer field their positions were moved to first base. Harmon Killebrew, Carl Yastrzemski, and Stan Musial all played first base at the end of their careers. I don't know why managers only used this strategy in cases in which the player is obviously an extremely talented hitter. It may have had as much to do with the contract status of these players as anything. Maybe Musial was making too much money to sit on the bench so the manager had to put him in somewhere. This would be worth studying if somebody were interested.

There were 4 names on this list that really jumped out at me. They were Albert Pujols, Will Clark, Jason Giambi, and Dick Allen. Dick Allen had to have been giving a terrible subjective rating by Bill James when he did his ratings. I think that it was probably deserved since it makes no sense to rank somebody who isn't in the Hall of Fame as one of the top 5 first basemen who have ever lived. He must have been <a jerk> of historic proportion to not get elected into the HOF. I still think that he belongs. Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby were also jerks, but they are in. Will Clark also surprised me. I thought that James had him too high in his book, but I rated him higher than James did. He was a heckuva player from 1988 until 1992. Jason Giambi had a great run with the A's and was great with the Yankees until his illness this year. I didn't think that he was good enough for long enough to get this high on the list, but I was wrong. Albert Pujols has a legitimate chance to go down as the greatest player who has ever played this game. If he can continue doing what he is doing until he is in his late 30's, he will have a career that stacks up with Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, and all of the other great players who have played. A player usually has to play 5 seasons at a high level before you can get a good idea of where he will fit into this list. Pujols has only played 4 and he still looks good. If he plays as well next year as he did this year, he will already be in the top 5 all time. He is a historically great hitter and he's still only 24 years old.

Seth's Thoughts:

Like Justin, I have to agree that I am almost shocked with some of the names at or near the top of this list. Dick Allen was very good, but #3, at 1B, a hitter's position? Jeff Bagwell has had an absolutely incredible career and continues to produce, but I never would have thought he'd have the numbers to rank 4th all-time! And again, Will Clark was remarkable for a bunch of years, but when you think of a prototypical 1B, you don't think Will Clark.

Another thing I look for is where current players are ranking. There are a few 1B in the top 10, including Bagwell, Frank Thomas and Jason Giambi. Ryan Klesko ranking 40th was shocking! However, the name that surprised me the most on this list was Albert Pujols. He has only been in the big leagues for four years, so to rank as high as he does, even considering that one of the categories is the top FIVE consecutive seasons is amazing. But this ranking tells us just how incredible those first four seasons have been! Also, he has not been injured, so his per-162 numbers are impressive too. Now, if he stays healthy, and stays productive, he will continue to work his way up this list. So far, he has not had a season which would detract from any of his numbers. And, he is the youngest (ahem) player in the rankings!

Another thing that is interesting for me is to look at those old-time names of players that you've only really heard stories about. There are a lot of guys whose names you've heard so frequently, you assume that they were great players (and yes, any of the players on this list are great, but I mean top level all-time), and they end up ranking below current or recent players that you didn't realize were as good as they apparently are. On this list includes Fred Merkle, who is best known for not running all the way to 2B on a "game-winning" single and was ruled out on a fielder's choice (the game ended in a tie). Wally Pipp was, of course, Wally Pipp'd, by Lou Gehrig, who ironically ranks #1 on this list! Eddie Robinson is best known for leading Grambling's football program to  LOT of wins. George Burns was best known for his role in the "Oh God, You Devil" movies. OK, those last two aren't really those players, just guys with the same names.

I am surprised the Bill Buckner ranks as low as he does. I mean, he has over 2,700 hits over his 22 year career. Sure, he's known for his error in the '86 World Series, but he was a great player. And he ranks 92nd overall, one behind Derrek Lee.

Twins rankings:

#11 - Harmon Killebrew (Twins 1961-1974)

#52 - Kent Hrbek (Twins 1981-1994)

#94- Don Mincher (Twins 1961-1966)

#104 - Vic Power (Twins 1962-1964)

#117 - David Ortiz  (Twins 1997-2002)

#119 - Doug Mientkiewicz (Twins 1998-2004)

Three of these guys play for the Twins from 1962-1964. Of course, Killebrew played other positions, most frequently 3B, and wasn't particularly good defensively at all of them. Power was great defensively. So, they made it work. Kent Hrbek was really good for a short time.

Summary:

This is a far stronger position than catcher (no surprise), but it isn't as deep as I thought. I think that there are great players through at least Mo Vaughn (#44), but after that, there are a lot of very good, all-star caliber players. There are a lot of surprises throughout this list, but isn't that really what makes these lists fun? Now we can debate the rankings.

Do you have any thoughts on these first base ratings? Do you have any questions for myself or for Justin Ahern on this ranking or how this was comprised? If you have any thoughts, please e-mail me, and be sure to check back in the coming weeks for the rest of the positions.

ALL-TIME TOP 100s: Second Base

Good morning!

I need to start today by doing a quick little advertisement for our good friends over at The Hardball Times. They have released a book The Hardball Times 2004 Baseball Annual which is now available for you to purchase. The printed book costs $16.75 and you can order it here. You can also get a downloadable version for $6.25. It will include some of the best writing by their great stable of writers. I would certainly encourage any of your to purchase the book!  As Aaron Gleeman wrote yesterday:

The book is great and includes a ton of hard work from everyone involved. We've got plenty of new articles covering the 2004 season, from in-depth division reviews and a recap of the postseason to looks at the year in the minors, college baseball, the Japanese leagues, and fantasy ball. We've also included some of our very best work from the website over the past year, as well as an extraordinary amount of stats and graphs (so it's not only a good read, it can be a reference guide for years to come).

We've got all the Win Shares info you could ever ask for, league and team totals for tons of categories, individual league leaders, four pages of numbers devoted to each and every team with detailed batting, pitching and fielding stats, and individual plate appearance outcomes (strikeout, walk, fly ball, ground ball, line drive) for every significant pitcher and hitter in baseball. Plus a whole bunch of other stuff too.

Well, I guess I was wrong in my choice for NL Cy Young. Roger Clemens won his seventh Cy Young, his first in the National League. Sure, I still believe that Randy Johnson had the better, more dominant season, but Roger Clemens was really good too. He was 18-4 with a 2.98 ERA. So, I won't feel too bad about this selection. Now, if tomorrow we find out that Curt Schilling wins the AL Cy Young and Johan Santana doesn't, I won't be as understanding!!

Finally, be sure to check out Stick and Ball Guy's thoughts on the baseball Hall of Fame. He describes it quite well. Here are my thoughts on the Hall of Fame from my visit a couple of years ago.

Today, we will continue the Top 100s series that Justin Ahern researched for us. If you would like some background on the process used to develop this report and ranking, please click here. Here are the previous Top 100 lists:

Justin's Thoughts:

Part of the reason that I wanted to do these rankings is because I believe something and I wanted to see if it was true. I believe that far too few of the player that I grew up watching are getting elected to the Hall of Fame. For some reason career counting stats have become the standard for electing players into the HOF. Players almost have to hit 500 home runs or get 3,000 hits or win 300 games to get elected. That has never been the case. There isn't a position that states my case more clearly than second base. Ryne Sandberg isn't in the HOF and he obviously belongs there. Charlie Gehringer, Rod Carew, Frankie Frisch, Billy Herman, Nellie Fox, Bobby Doerr, Tony Lazzeri, Johnny Evers, Red Schoendienst, Bill Mazeroski, and Bid McPhee are all in the HOF and they all rate lower than Sandberg on this list. There is no doubt that you can argue that Gehringer, Carew, Fox, and maybe Frisch and Mazeroski were as good as Sandberg, but those other guys don't even compare. They are more equal to Lou Whitaker, Willie Randolph, Chuck Knoblach, Ray Durham, Edgardo Alfonso, and Bret Boone than Sandberg and we will all be dead before any of those guys get elected. I wonder if that's why Roberto Alomar is still playing. He probably feels like he has to get to 3,000 to get elected to the HOF. I don't blame him for thinking that.

There are several active players on this list and the only one who really surprises me is Edgardo Alfonso. He was an excellent player when he was on the Mets and playing in Shea Stadium deflated his hitting stats a little. It's rare for a guy playing in New York to be underrated, but this might be a case of that happening. He did get some MVP consideration a couple of times, but I didn't think that he would rate this high. I was curious about where Boone and Kent would rate and I think that they are about where they belong. Kent still has an outside shot at making it to the Hall. His biggest problem is that he could be the 4th best second baseman on the ballot by the time he is eligible unless Biggo, Alomar, or Sandberg is in by then.

This is another position that shows the limited ability of Win Shares to evaluate defense. James had Morgan rated #1 and my method shows Hornsby being #1. James chose Morgan because Hornsby couldn't field his position much better than I could. He is probably right. Mazeroski is also rated too low in this system because he was a great fielder-probably the best ever.

The Chuck Knoblach trade was a good trade for all parties involved except Knoblach. Knoblach helped the Yankees win 3 World Series championships while the Twins got several prospect directly and directly from that trade. The only loser in the trade was Knoblach. It may have cost him a shot at a HOF career. He is still only 36 years old right now. I think that had Knoblach remained a Twin, he wouldn't have forgotten how to throw the ball to the first baseman and would probably still be playing today. If he were still active and effective, he would rate right up with Jeff Kent and possibly as high as Alomar and Biggio. He really was a great player while with the Twins..

Seth's Thoughts:

I guess this statistical analysis legitimizes every argument for Ryne Sandberg getting inducted into the Hall of Fame. I mean, there are a bunch of second basemen who didn't accomplish half as much and are enshrined. But if the career of Sandberg is surprising, imagine the shock on my face when I saw how Craig Biggio ranks with the all-time great second basemen. He started as a catcher, and became a Gold Glove caliber second baseman. Then the move to centerfield and this year, he moved to left field. And had one of his best seasons of his career.

I really thought that Roberto Alomar would have ranked higher on this list, but you have to assume that his per-162 games played numbers have really dropped in recent years. Jeff Kent is high on the lest, as is Bret Boone. You have to wonder how continuing their careers will affect their rankings.

The '80s were a golden era for 2B with Ryne Sandberg and the AL comination of Bobby Grich, Lou Whitaker and Willie Randolph. Rod Carew was a 1B by that time.

I really like two sport athletes. I will argue with anyone that Bo Jackson is the greatest "Athlete" of all time, or at least or the past fifty years. Another two sport athlete was Delino Deshields. Of course, he didn't play two sports professionally, but he did turn down basketball scholarships to sign with the Expos. I liked him, but only in researching his seasonal Win Shares did I realize just how good he really was for a decade or so.

Twins rankings:

#7 - Rod Carew (Twins 1967-1978)

#29 - Chuck Knoblauch (Twins 1991-1997)

#55 - Tom Herr (Twins 1988)

#109 - Todd Walker  (Twins 1996-2000)

I still get upset just reading the name of Tom Herr! Why did Andy McPhail feel the need to trade Tom Brunansky for Tom Herr!?? Steve Lombardozzi was just fine for the Twins (unless you ask Dan Gladden, of course. Speaking of names that make a Twins fans' skin crawl, look no further than Todd Walker. Sure, Chuck Knoblauch left the Twins under bad circumstances, but the fact is that he was incredible during his seven seasons in Minnesota!

Summary:

Second base is a surprisingly good, deep position. There are not a lot of top-level players, but many very strong players. Bill Mazeroski, for all of the defensive Win Shares, he accumulated was not a great all-around player.

Do you have any thoughts on these first base ratings? Do you have any questions for myself or for Justin Ahern on this ranking or how this was comprised? If you have any thoughts, please e-mail me, and be sure to check back in the coming weeks for the rest of the positions.
