Hi Gang! mini_tb here pinch hitting for Seth... Well, the Twins lost a handful of players in the Rule 5 draft and drafted no one. Lahey and Guzman I would say were the big names taken. Pino and Winfree are amongst those not selected. We can breathe sigh of relief there. The Twins obviously still have room on the 40 man. Remember we still have a shot of getting the major league portion picks returned to us. Here’s a brief recap of the Twins related portion of the draft.
Major League Phase
#1 Tim Lahey taken by Tampa Bay – Wow! Seth thought he could go, but #1? Rumor has him going to the Cubs.
#15 R.A. Dickey taken by Seattle – We may have just lost this year’s Sidney Pnson/Ramon Ortiz young player blocker. Crushing.
#30 Garrett Guzman taken by Washington – how many OF do the Nats have? 1. Milledge 2. Dukes 3. Kearns 4. Pena 5. Dmitri Young. Dukes is Dukes, and Nick Johnson is Nick Johnson. That OF depth could vanish in a hurry. Let’s hope they can at least leave Spring Training with these 5 outfielders in tact, so we can hopefully get Guzman back. He is a solid bat in the high minors who at least profiles as a decent backup option. He compares favorably with the Josh Rabes and Lew Fords of the world.
Other picks of interest: Evan Meek by the Pittsburgh at #2 and Brian Barton by St. Louis at #10. Nice pick by the Cards! They got the projected #1 at #10. The Twins were the first team to pass at #11. Would they have picked Barton?
AAA Phase
#1 Rashad Eldridge taken by Tampa Bay – There goes our future or 6th outfielder...
#2 Josh Hill taken by Pittsburgh - Yawn
Ummmmm… I’m thinking of something to say… There goes 2 guys that are almost as necessary to the Twins’ organization as a bicycle is to a fish?
That’s it for me. Feel free to discuss.
