Wednesday Notes

And WEEK 12 PICKS

Here we are on a Wednesday and yet, it feels like a Friday! That is because of the wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and taking a day off on Friday, I get a four day weekend.

·         I think that the writers that voted for the major awards did a really good job this year. Yesterday, they awarded the NL MVP to Jimmy Rollins. To me, that was the easy choice, and that isn’t to take anything away from Matt Holliday or Prince Fielder. In listening to mlb.com radio, people continue to talk about the intangibles and leadership that Rollins brings to the table. Although that is all true and Rollins is the epitome of team leader, I think that explanation really shorts Rollins. Look at the numbers he put up offensively. He absolutely deserves the award. Ryan Howard won the MVP in 2006. Jimmy Rollins in 2007. How about Chase Utley in 2008?

·         As I mentioned yesterday afternoon, the Twins added Matt Macri, Matt Tolbert and Bobby Korecky to their 40 man roster. That leaves the team with 39 on the 40 man roster. They could still add a free agent or make a trade, but if they don’t and the roster stays at 39, they will be able to make a pick in the Rule V draft. I am most surprised by the addition of Bobby Korecky. It’s not that he doesn’t deserve it, but I personally would probably have added added Yohan Pino, Brock Peterson, David Winfree or Garrett Guzman ahead of him. But it just makes the Eric Milton trade even better for the Twins. $9 million saved and Eric Milton in exchange for four years of Carlos Silva, Nick Punto and Bobby Korecky.

·         I think Twins fans need to take a step back. The team isn’t going to sign the top, high-dollar value free agents. But bashing the Craig Monroe trade is a bit ridiculous. To say that Tony Clark would be a bad signing is a bit crazy. If either one or both of them make the roster, they present a step forward for the organizational depth/bench. Are they big names? No. But signing a 32 year old CF for six years and potentially nine digits doesn’t make sense either. Or signing a fourth starter for five years and $50 million? That doesn’t make sense either. I just don’t understand why some Twins fans get so upset and frustrated at this point. I mean, the Winter Meetings haven’t even started.

·         Torii Hunter says he is going to enjoy his Thanksgiving and think. He plans to make a decision by next week. Like I said yesterday, I can’t imagine him signing without talking to more than three teams. I do believe that the White Sox have the advantage right now, but I would not be at all surprised if the Rangers and Royals both come in with higher bids. And I don’t believe that the Dodgers have even talked dollars yet. And I’m sure there are other teams. I think that the Twins need to stay away!!

·         I read that the Marlins are close to a deal sending Miguel Cabrera to the Dodgers in exchange for a familiar group of names. It was Matt Kemp, Andy LaRoche and Clayton Kershaw. If that deal happens… what a tremendous deal for the Marlins. Sure, they will again be bashed as being small market and unable to keep their top players, but when they can rip off the Dodgers like this, they have to do that trade. In my mind, if the Twins want to deal Johan Santana, I would ask the Dodgers to add one more mid-level prospect to that list and it would be done.

·         Jason Tyner participated/instructed at a baseball camp in Texas last weekend. He worked with a couple of baseball’s top prospects, Reds OF Jay Bruce and Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz. Proceeds went toward Leukemia research.

·

·         Finally, Here are our panel’s week 12 picks. Because of the short week, I am posting these now. I made the mistake of telling the group that I didn’t need the picks until Wednesday. I should have said Tuesday so that we could make these picks available to the readers. As I receive the rest of the picks, I will continue to update this. So be sure to check back.

·         Also, again, I will not be formally posting over the long weekend, but there may be an occasional quick post.
