AFL UPDATE
UPDATE - Thursday 5:45 a.m. - I haven't been able to sit down and just write as I did during the season. That's why there have just been a couple of quick articles or notes the last couple of days. I do hope to get back into this, and tomorrow I will have another Q&A with a Twins minor leaguer. I have a few plans for things throughout the offseason, so be sure to check back daily.
Today, I just wanted to post what's going on with the Twins minor leaguers playing down in the Arizona Fall League. I will try to update you daily on how these players perform. If you want a more first-hand account of what happens in the Arizona Fall League, check out the Twins Peeks blog at mlb.com. Kevin Slowey and David Winfree are writing a blog entry each day.
The Twins minor leaguers play for the Mesa team this year. Here is how they did in their game on Tuesday:
Matt Tolbert came into the game late and played 2B. He was 1-1 with a double.
Matt Moses started at 3B and went 1-3 with a strikeout. He also had an error in the field.
David Winfree came into the game at 3B to replace Moses. He struck out in his lone at bat.
Former Twins pitching prospect Adam Harben (who went to the Cubs in the Phil Nevin trade) is on the same team. He started this game and gave up a run on two hits in two innings. He struck out three. Jay Sawatski gave up a hit and walked one, but he did not allow a run in his inning.
Here is how they did last night:
Matt Moses against started at 3B. He went 1-3 with a run and an RBI.
David Winfree started the game at 1B and then went back over to 3B for the last few innings. He was 0-4.
Errol Simonitsch started and went 2.2 scoreless innings. He gave up three hits, walked one and struck out two.
Kevin Cameron came in next and got the win. He went 1.1 innings and struck out three hitters.
Kevin Slowey got the save by pitching the final inning. He gave up a hit and struck one out in the scoreless frame.
Here are just a couple more links for you to peruse today:
Chris Coste got to know Corey Lidle in spring training and Coste says that he was instrumental in getting him to the big leagues and getting him playing time once he got there.
Take a minute to check out Peter Reike's terrific Twins blog. I just found out about it the other day and believe I will be checking it out frequently.
Think the Twins should bring back Carlos Silva by picking up his $4.3 million option? They have until five days after the World Series to decide. Aaron Gleeman has a very well put together article with his thoughts?
Nick & Nick put out their choices for baseball's awards. I don't want to post too much about their choices here because you should go there to read their thoughts and picks. But they each have a Twins player for their MVP choice, and my choice for AL MVP is a different Twins player. I will probably post my choices for baseball's awards later tonight.
I am sorry I haven't been updating or linking to Roger's articles at scout.com lately. I really don't know why. But, what he is doing is looking at the Twins minor league system position-by-position. His most recent article was a look at the Third Basemen. Previously, he reviewed the Catchers, First Basemen, Second Basemen and Shortstops. Of course, you can discuss his articles and anything Twins related at the Hardball Lounge.
That's it for Thursday. Have a terrific day! I will be back tomorrow with another Q&A with a Twins minor league prospects. Please feel free to e-mail me any time, or leave Comments below.
