WEEK 5 Picks

Hi Everyone! Welcome to Friday! Thank Goodness!! I don't have a lot for you again today. I thought that the Playoff Contest would be a fun thing for the readers of this site and more, it is going to be a little bit of work. There were right around 60 of you who signed up and submitted a roster. So, it is going to take me just a little bit more time to get all of the rosters put into my template. When I have that done, I will put together a web page which will update the results of that. Just a couple of quick thoughts before we get to the Week 5, Viking-less football picks:

• The Phillies lost Games 1 and 2 at home to the red-hot Colorado Rockies. The Rockies can flat-out hit, and they are certainly showing it. Wasn't it fun seeing Kyle Lohse give up the big grand slam to Kaz Matsui? Matt Holliday and Troy Tulowitski went back to back in the first inning. Chase Utley has struggled to put the ball in play. Jimmy Rollins was about the only Phillie to show up in Game 2. The Phillies have certainly put themselves in a hole that will be tough to crawl out of as they will need to win two games in Coors Field before a potential Game 5 back in the City of Brotherly Love.

• Is anyone else happy to see the Diamondbacks showing the Yankees of the NL what's up!? The Baby Backs are getting the job done. Mark Reynolds, Stephen Drew and Chris Young have all contributed greatly in the first two games. I thought young players froze up in big games. That's what the media tells us. And how about Augie Ojeda being a spark plug for the team. Good for him. That's the kind of story that exemplifies the playoffs. Anyone can be hot in a short series, just as anyone can have a short slump! I love that the Cubs are getting embarrassed!

• The Red Sox won their first game with an excellent performance from Josh Beckett and some power from Kevin Youklis and David Ortiz. The Angels lineup isn't real strong when they are fully healthy, but without Gary Matthews and with Vlad Guerrero at less than 100%, there isn't much.

• And finally, Cleveland dominated the Yankees in their Game 1 last night. Asdrubal Cabrera and Ryan Garko were a couple more young guys who did well, but so did everyone. The Yankees pitching just is not good. And yet again, it's still a short series, so anything can happen. It'll be fun to see what Fausto Carmona does against the Yankees because CC Sabathia was far from good. Ideally for me in this series, A-Rod would go 5-5 in the next two games, but the Indians would win both of them.

Anyway, last week was a really bad week for our panel, so we are hoping to have a big comeback week! Here are our picks (those that are blank will be filled in as I get them)
