USA Today Names McCardell

Twins Minor League of Year

USA Today named its 2008 Minor League Player of the Year. It was David Price, the #1 overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. He was a very deserving choice. Matt Weiters of the Orioles organization was named the Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America last week. He was also a good choice. Both are future big league All-Stars.

USA Today also gives its choice for each organization’s Minor League Player of the Year. Who was their choice for the Twins? Well, he played this year for the Beloit Snappers. I know who you’re thinking…

And you’re wrong. USA Today selected RHP Mike McCardell as the Twins Minor League Player of the Year. They wrote:

Minnesota: RHP Michael McCardell, 23, went 9-4 with a 2.86 ERA for low-A Beloit (Wis.). He struck out 139 (second among Twins minor leaguers) and walked 25 in 135⅓ innings pitched.

First of all, let me say that McCardell had an excellent 2008 season. Like his pro debut at E-Town in 2007, he racks up strikeouts while limiting walks. He has three above average pitches and excellent poise on the mound. It is a great honor for McCardell, and very good recognition.

Now, how anyone would pick anyone other than Ben Revere as the Twins Minor League Player of the Year is beyond me. I think that’s a pretty easy choice. But again, you won’t see me too upset about another Twins prospect getting deserved recognition too!
