TWINS THOUGHTS

Twins Minor League Reports

Fantasy Football Draft

Random Thoughts

Good morning everyone! Well, I have been gone for quite awhile now and I do feel bad. I took a day off last Friday from work and went to Valleyfair. There is a picture of me and my girlfriend on the Wild Thing ride that I may or may not scan and post here. Let's just say that I'm not a ride guy and well, that is a scary ride! It was fun though. It was a busy weekend, and I stayed down in the Twin Cities for some training for work on Monday. Left the cities at about 4:30 and got back home at about midnight. Slept! Sleep is good!

So, on that note, I want to get caught up with the site a little bit today and post on several topics, but I also need to make sure that I get some sleep tonight too. So, it may not be the longest of entries. However, one part of today's posting will be quite long. I participated in another fantasy football draft last night and I don't know how I did. So, I am going to post the results of the draft and, as I have in the past, point out what I believe to be the best pick, the worst pick and the most risky pick of each round. Then, hopefully tomorrow I will be back with more.

As always, if you have a question, comment, or an idea for a future posting, please e-mail me. Also, feel free to use the Comments section below to ask our readers their opinions on questions you might have.

Twins Thoughts

Well, that was a pathetic offensive display, huh? Getting shut out by Mark Redman! But, it does make a lot of sense, really. The Twins were coming home after winning two out of three games in Chicago against the White Sox. It is natural for their intensity to come back down when they come home and take on the Kansas City Royals. I just don't think all fans understand how difficult it must be to maintain a high level of intensity for 162 games, and many times that comes down against lesser opponents. The Royals are not good, but they are a pro team. They have won 48 out of 133 games. That isn't a lot, but it is 36% That means that they average winnings a little over one game in every three game series.  They aren't just going to lay over. They do have some quality professional hitters like Mike Sweeney and Mark Grudzielanek. They do have guys like Ryan Shealy, Joey Gathright and Mark Teahan who have some potential. And they have guys like David DeJesus, Emil Brown and John Buck who are somewhere in the middle.

And then some credit has to be given to Mark Redman. He was able to keep the Twins hitters off-balance the whole game. It is the same thing on a more individual basis as the above theory. A team can come down a level or two intensity-wise when facing a poor team. The same thing happens for hitters against a soft-tosser. Let's face it, 95% of pitchers in the big leagues throw between 88 and 95 mph. Mark Redman topped out at 83 mph. Watching him pitch, it is easy for us to say he should be easy to hit, but that is far from the case. Watching him pitch from the dugout, it looks like he should be easy to hit. If you ever played ball growing up, from Little League through high school, there was always an opponent who threw a pitcher who didn't throw hard, but he just threw strikes. Batter after batter gets out, and batter after batter comes into the dugout saying "Let's hit this guy! He's got nothing!" My theory is then how is he getting us out? Well, he is throwing strikes. He's getting ahead in the count, and then he is expanding the strike zone. Look at the last at bat, by Michael Cuddyer. On the final pitch, he was way out front and hit a weak fly ball to end the game. So yeah, Mark Redman is not great. However, he has been in the big leagues for seven years. Yes, his ERA is well over five this season. However, he is in the big leagues because when he is hitting his spots, he can do exactly what he did to the Twins.

The truly unfortunate thing about last night's game is Matt Garza was really impressive in his start. In 7.2 innings, he gave up just two runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out seven. And he had to take the loss. It is yet another example of why the Win stat for a pitcher is incredibly unimportant. The progression of Garza has been drastic. His first start was horrible. His next start started out poor, but he came on in the latter innings. His last start was very good. And last night, he was superb!

With the White Sox win last night against Tampa Bay, the Twins are again 1/2 game behind the Sox in the AL Wild Card. The Red Sox are a ways back and both Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz are out indefinitely. Ortiz has missed a couple of games while he is being checked out on why he is again experiencing an irregular heart beat. It is just another reminder that no matter how intense baseball can be, particularly in late August and September, there are other things that are far more important. It is unfortunate that we get so many reminders of that.

In Game 2 of the series tonight, Boof Bonser will face Luke Hudson. It is obviously important for the Twins to try to win two out of three in the series and that is still possible.

I got a very interesting e-mail from a man named "Al" late last week that I thought was worth posting. Hopefully it is something that we can discuss in the Comments below:

Why is it that Torii Hunter is such a failure in the eyes of us "knowing fans", while Mike Cuddyer is highly thought of? Torii has 18 h.r.s. Mike has 18 h.r.s. Torii is hitting .274. Mike is hitting .267. Torii has 68 rbi. Mike has 83 rbi. Mike bats 4th, Torii 6th. Torii missed 13 games on the DL. If we give him his usual rbi rate for the 13 games, he has 75 or 8 less than Mike who bats with more men on base. Torii is faster and a better fielder. I think it is because we expect Mike to, um, stink, and we expect Torii to excel. Torii kills us when he flails at the first pitch after consecutive walks. He enrages us with his rally killing d.p. grounders. He is a below average c.f. at this point with the foot thing, and he never developed his base stealing abilities, so he is a major disappointment, while Mike with similar stats is a hero. This is a strange game, but it seems to me that the disfavor Hunter is held in is largely anecdotal; we remember the flailing and the d.p.s, but he is basically the same offensive player as Cuddyer. What do you think? Do secondary stats all swing in favor of Cuddyer. I doubt it.

This is a very fair question and when I read it, I was not really in a spot to take the time necessary to answer it at all. I asked Al if I could post it and he responded that I could, but added:

Sure, post it, you may want to bring the stats up to date. I think I am saying that with the major league's leading hitter, plus a .312 hitter, and a .294 hitter batting ahead of him[ all of whom are fast]Mike should maybe have more rbi, and would if he took fewer strikes on 2-0 and 3-1 pitches, and swung at fewer balls in the dirt. Compared to the cleanup hitters on the Chisox, Yankees, And Red Sox, he does not fare too well.He is striking out more than ever, and has been stuck on 18 h.r.s for awhile. All this to avoid having 2 left-hand hitters bat consecutively.

Here are the two players' numbers through last night's game:

                     H-AB   BA/OBP/SLG   OPS  2B  3B  HR  RBI  BB   SO

Cuddyer   119-429  .277/.360/.506    .858   34    5    18     87    50  108

Hunter      116-425  .273/.343/.471    .813   17    2    21     69    42    87

So, the number of games that Hunter missed while on the DL is made up for by the games that Cuddyer missed in April when he was the team's fourth or fifth outfielder. Cuddyer's OPS is 5.5% higher than that of Hunter's. The main contributor to that appears to be the doubles totals.

What are your thoughts? Leave some Comments.

Here is another question for discussion. It comes from "Scott" Maybe you can help me with a response:

if Justin Morneau were to reach 40/130 rbi's and the twins make the playoffs instead of the pair of sox teams, how good are morneau's chances at mvp?

I think that if Justin Morneau reaches those numbers AND the Twins make the playoffs, he should be the league's MVP. Will it happen? Well, if I had to vote right now, my vote would probably go to Jermaine Dye of the White Sox. If we're being realistic, however, David Ortiz or Derek Jeter have to be considered the front runners for the whole East Coast bias reasoning. They are both having great seasons and deserve to be mentioned. I think that Morneau is hurt by a couple of things. First, he plays in the Midwest. Second, only recently has his name even been mentioned in this discussion. Joe Mauer is the Twins player most mentioned as an MVP candidate, something that he deserves. So, they could potentially take votes from each other. Any chance Morneau could win the MVP? Leave some Comments.

FANTASY FOOTBALL DRAFT

Last night, I was involved in my first live draft for fantasy football. I was in one about a month ago already, but I did that over the phone. So, here is what happened. If you're involved in a fantasy football league and haven't drafted yet, just consider this a free mock draft. Again, I will post my thoughts on the Best Pick, Worst Pick and Most Risky Pick from each round. Please take those thoughts with a grain of salt as I have watched very little on football so far this fall, so I may not be the best source. Also, as we get into those rounds where there are a lot of kickers and defenses, I won't have a best, worth and most risky in each of those rounds.

First Round:

1 - Shawn Alexander - RB - Seattle Seahawks

2 - Larry Johnson - RB - Kansas City Chiefs

3 - Ladanian Tomlinson - RB - San Diego Chargers (Best Pick - How can you go wrong with any of the Top 3? I would prefer the third, only because then you can pick before the other two in the second round.)

4 - Tiki Barber - RB - New York Giants (Seth's Pick - Man, I wanted to be a Top 3 pick because those guys are the elite. But, I just thought that Tiki was the guy to go with next because he gets so many touches.)

5 - Edgerrin James - RB - Arizona Cardinals

6 - Ronnie Brown - RB - Miami Dolphins (Most Risky - There were plenty of other bigger names available here. Brown has never really been a full-time runner since he was in high school because in college, he and Cadillac were teammates.)

7 - Stephen Jackson - RB - St. Louis Rams

8 - Rudi Johnson - RB - Cincinnati Bengals

9 - Carnell "Cadillac" Williams - RB - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

10 - Peyton Manning - QB - Indianapolis Colts

11 - Clinton Portis - RB - Washington Redskins (Worst Pick - and its not even a bad pick at this time. His shoulder injury would be the only concern.)

12 - Willis McGahee - RB - Buffalo Bills

Second Round:

13 - Chad Johnson - WR - Cincinnati Bengals (Best Pick - He is that good. Of course, Carson Palmer needs to stay healthy.)

14 - Lamont Jordan - RB - Oakland Raiders

15 - Reggie Bush - RB - New Orleans Saints (Most Risky - Could Bush be incredible? Absolutely. But how many touches will the rookie get, and what will be his regular season game-role?)

16 - Torry Holt - WR - St. Louis Rams

17 - Willie Parker - RB - Pittsburgh Steelers

18 - Larry Fitzgerald - WR - Arizona Cardinals

19 - Bryant Westbrook - RB - Philadelphia Eagles

20 - Steve Smith - WR - Carolina Panthers

21 - Kevin Jones - RB - Detroit Lions (Seth's Pick - I don't like this pick, but I do think that with Jon Kitna at the helm, the Lions offense should be much better and more efficient. That must involve some running game. Worst Pick - maybe a top WR would have been good here.)

22 - Anquan Boldin - WR - Arizona Cardinals

23 - Julius Jones - RB - Dallas Cowboys

24 - Marvin Harrison - WR - Indianapolis Colts

Third Round:

25 - Warrick Dunn - RB - Atlanta Falcons

26 - Eli Manning - QB - New York Giants

27 - Chester Taylor - RB - Minnesota Vikings

28 - Randy Moss - WR - Oakland Raiders (Seth's Pick - I went into the draft thinking RB, RB, WR, and Moss was the top WR left on my board. Has 1st rounder ability, just needs to stay healthy.)

29 - Carson Palmer - QB - Cincinnati Bengals

30 - Donald Driver - WR - Green Bay Packers (Worst Pick - Just a little too soon. This is far from a bad pick though. I mean, Favre does have to throw to someone.)

31 - Reggie Wayne - WR - Indianapolis Colts

32 - Terrell Owens - WR - Dallas Cowboys (Best Pick - He's going to play during the regular season, and when he does, he's as good as any WR out there.)

33 - Frank Gore - RB - San Francisco 49ers

34 - Joseph Addai - RB - Indianapolis Colts

35 - Mike Bell - RB - Denver Broncos (Most Risky - Didn't Tatum Bell prove to be pretty good last year?)

36 - Reuben Droughns - RB - Cleveland Browns

Fourth Round:

37 - Roy Williams - WR - Detroit Lions (Best Pick - To me, this is an absolute steal this late, especially now that he has a legit QB throwing to him!)

38 - Matt Hasselbeck - QB - Seattle Seahawks

39 - Chris Chambers - WR - Miami Dolphins

30 - Tom Brady - QB - New England Patriots

41 - Antonio Gates - TE - San Diego Chargers

42 - Deshon Foster - RB - Carolina Panthers

43 - Derrick Mason - WR - Baltimore Ravens (Worst Pick - I've had him on my teams most years, and although he will get you points every week, he rarely has a big game. WR are a dime a dozen.)

44 - Corey Dillon - RB - New England Patriots (Most Risky - Can he stay healthy?)

45 - Marc Bulger - QB - St. Louis Rams (Seth's Pick - Went into the draft thinking RB, RB, WR, QB, and Bulger was the top QB left on my draft board.)

46 - Jamal Lewis - RB - Baltimore Ravens

47 - Santana Moss - WR - Washington Redskins

48 - Hines Ward - WR - Pittsburgh Steelers

Fifth Round:

49 - Darrell Jackson - WR - Seattle Seahawks

50 - TJ Houshmandzadeh - WR - Cincinnati Bengals

51 - Drew Bledsoe - WR - Dallas Cowboys

52 - Plaxico Burress - WR - New York Giants (Seth's Pick - At this point, it's best available. If Eli Manning is going to take that next step to super stardom, Burress will be a big part of what gets him there. He should also get the end zone catches.)

53 - Javon Walker - WR - Denver Broncos (Most Risky - How is the knee, and how will missing a full season affect him?)

54 - Rod Smith - WR - Denver Broncos (Worst Pick - he's still solid, he's just old!)

55 - Fred Taylor - RB - Jacksonville Jaguars

56 - Cedric Benson - RB - Chicago Bears

57 - Andre Johnson - WR - Houston Texas

58 - Jeremy Shockey - TE - New York Giants

59 - Joe Horn - WR - New Orleans Saints

60 - Donovan McNabb - QB - Philadelphia Eagles (Best Pick - This late, you have to like McNabb here, even if you have to question his supporting cast.)

Sixth Round:

61 - Thomas Jones - RB - Chicago Bears

62 - Deion Branch - WR - kinda New England Patriots (Worst Pick - It happens every year. A guy holds out thinking he's worth so much. They sign very late, and then they get hurt.)

63 - Donte Stallworth - WR - Philadelphia Eagles

64 - Dominic Rhodes - RB - Indianapolis Colts

65 - Nate Burleson - WR - Seattle Seahawks

66 - DeAngelo Williams - RB - Carolina Panthers (Best Pick - Seriously, does anyone think that D. Foster will stay healthy long?)

67 - Chris Brown - RB - Tennessee Titans

68 - Terry Glenn - WR - Dallas Cowboys

69 - Deuce McAllister - New Orleans Saints (Seth's Pick - Most Risky - How is the knee, and how many touches will he lose to Reggie Bush? Two pretty big questions, but for my 3rd RB, I think it's worth the risk.)

70 - Lee Evans - WR - Buffalo Bills

71 - Keyshawn Johnson - WR - Carolina Panthers

72 - Trent Green - QB - Kansas City Chiefs

Seventh Round:

73 - Marion Barber III - RB - Dallas Cowboys

74 - Tatum Bell - RB - Denver Broncos

75 - Muhsin Muhammed - WR - Chicago Bears

76 - Joey Galloway - WR - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Seth's Pick - I wanted to take Daunte here already, but I thought that he might slip just one more round. I was wrong. We play three WR each week, so I wanted another here. I'm not a big fan of his, but he has produced.)

77 - Lawrence Maroney - RB - New England Patriots

78 - Jake Delhomme - QB - Carolina Panthers

79 - Kurt Warner - QB - Arizona Cardinals (Most Risky - He could put up huge numbers... if he keeps the starting job over Matt Leinert.)

80 - Daunte Culpepper - QB - Miami Dolphins (Best Pick - I should have taken him. He has the potential to be the Top point scoring QB, concern about the knee, but he has played well in preseason, showing health, and that's the only question mark. Great pick this low.)

81 - Wally Lundy - RB - Houston Texans

82 - LenDale White - RB - Tennessee Titans

83 - Laverneus Coles - WR - New York Jets

84 - Ahman Green - RB - Green Bay Packers (Worst Pick - I don't know, but he's scary. He's just hurt so often, and I don't know if the upside is real high any more.)

Eighth Round:

85 - Tony Gonzalez - TE - Kansas City Chiefs

86 - David Givens - WR - Tennessee Titans

87 - Keenan McCardell - WR - San Diego Chargers

88 - Eddie Kennison - WR - Kansas City Chiefs

89 - Reggie Brown - WR - Philadelphia Eagles (Best Pick - McNabb does have to throw to a WR sometime, and take a look at his numbers from last year. Not bad at all.)

90 - Antonio Bryant - WR - San Francisco 49ers

91 - Jay Feely - K - Atlanta Falcons (Worst Pick - no one wants to be the first to take a kicker or a defense.)

92 - Travis Henry - RB - Tennessee Titans (Most Risky - He did nothing last year as the backup RB. What will he do this year as the team's #3 RB?)

93 - Kevan Barlow - RB - New York Jets (Seth's Pick - we play just two RB each week, but because of byes, it is nice to have a third RB who you can get some points from in those weeks. As of now, I think Barlow is the Jets #1 RB option, So I figured it was worth it at this point.)

94 - Ernest Wilford - WR - Jacksonville Jaguars

95 - Philip Rivers - QB - San Diego Chargers

96 - Kevin Curtis - WR - St. Louis Rams

Ninth Round:

97 - Neil Rackers - K - Arizona Cardinals

98 - Braylon Edwards - WR - Cleveland Browns (Best Pick - Here is a guy with a huge breakout potential. Taken this low, it's well worth the risk.)

99 - Michael Vick - QB - Atlanta Falcons (Worst Pick - Has as much potential still as anyone. But, from someone who has had him on my teams in past years, he can be so frustrating! 30 points one week keeps him in the lineup the next three weeks when he combines for 30 points!)

100 - Matt Jones - WR - Jacksonville Jaguars (Seth's Pick - I picked him up last season during his TD stretch. I don't know how big of a yardage guy he will be, but those goal line catches are worth six points!)

101 - Steve McNair - QB - Baltimore Ravens (Most Risky - Can he ever stay healthy? If so, he's very solid here!)

102 - Isaac Bruce - WR - St. Louis Rams

103 - Troy Williamson - WR - Minnesota Vikings

104 - Drew Brees - QB - New Orleans Saints

105 - Joe Juravicious - WR - Cleveland Browns

106 - Shayne Graham - K - Cincinnati Bengals

107 - Jake Plummer - QB - Denver Broncos

108 - Michael Clayton - WR - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tenth Round:

109 - Adam Viniteiri - K - Indianapolis Colts

110 - Jerry Porter - WR - Oakland Raiders

111 - Ben Roethlisberger - QB - Pittsburgh Steelers

112 - Chad Jackson - WR - New England Patriots (Best Pick - Tom Brady has to throw to someone.)

113 - Reche Caldwell - WR - New England Patriots

114 - Todd Heap - TE - Baltimore Ravens

115 - Brett Favre - QB - Green Bay Packers (Most Risky - Is there anything left in the tank, and how many bad decisions can he make this year?)

116 - Mark Clayton - WR - Baltimore Ravens

117 - Aaron Brooks - QB - Oakland Raiders (Seth's Pick - could be another risky pick just because when it comes to winning, Brooks has not been real strong. However, he's always put up big fantasy numbers, and coupled with Moss and Porter, he could be a decent backup QB.)

118 - Eric Moulds - WR - Houston Texans

119 - Curtis Martin - RB - New York Jets (Worst Pick - he is out at least 6 weeks, and I think most believe that it could be longer.)

120 - Drew Bennett - WR - Tennessee Titans

Eleventh Round:

121 - Samkon Gado - RB - Green Bay Packers

122 - David Akers - K - Philadelphia Eagles

123 - Pittsburgh Defense

124 - Josh Brown - K - Seattle Seahawks (Seth's Pick - I hate the part of the draft where you have to start picking Kickers and Defenses. But, you have to do it, so I figured Seattle will score plenty of points.)

125 - Robert Ferguson - WR - Green Bay Packers

126 - Chicago Defense

127 - Jon Kitna - QB - Detroit Lions (Best Pick - I think that Kitna has the ability to be a pro bowl QB and to get him as your #2 QB this late is a steal!)

128 - Mike Vanderjagt - K - Dallas Cowboys

129 - Carolina Defense

130 - Indianapolis Defense

131 - Jason Elam - K - Denver Broncos

132 - Alge Crumpler - TE - Atlanta Falcons

Twelfth Round:

133 - Byron Leftwich - QB - Jacksonville Jaguars

134 - Mike Anderson - RB - Baltimore Ravens

135 - Randy McMichael - TE - Miami Dolphins (Best Pick - Don't forget that Culpepper has always thrown a lot to his TEs!)

136 - John Kasay - K - Carolina Panthers

137 - TJ Duckett - RB - Washington Redskins

138 - Seattle Defense

139 - LJ Smith - TE - Philadelphia Eagles

140 - New York Giants Defense

141 - Kellen Winslow, Jr. - TE - Cleveland Browns (Seth's Pick - Fifth WR/TE, so worth the risk. Will Charlie Frye go to him?)

142 - Matt Stover - K - Baltimore Ravens

143 - Tampa Bay Defense

144 - Jacksonville Defense

Thirteenth Round:

145 - Ryan Longwell - K - Minnesota Vikings

146 - Vernon Davis - TE - San Francisco 49ers (Best Pick - Alex Smith needs someone to throw to, and may not have time to get it to WRs)

147 - Brandon Jacobs - RB - New York Giants

148 - Washington Defense (Seth's Pick - It's a defense... who cares?)

149 - Josh Scobee - K - Jacksonville Jaguars

150 - Cedric Houston - RB - New York Jets

151 - Nate Kaeding - K - San Diego Chargers

152 - Jeff Reed - K - Pittsburgh Steelers

153 - Mark Brunell - QB - Washington Redskins

154 - Duce Staley - RB - Pittsburgh Steelers

155 - Philadelphia Defense

156 - Dallas Defense

Fourteenth Round:

157 - Jeff Wilkens - K - St. Louis Rams

158 - Laurence Tynes - K - Kansas City Chiefs

159 - Sebastian Janikowski - K - Oakland Raiders

160 - Atlanta Defense

161 - Baltimore Defense

162 - S. Gostkowski - K - New England Patriots

163 - Rod Bironas - K - Tennessee Titans

164 - Denver Defense

165 - Miami Defense (Seth's Pick - It's a second defense. I'll probably drop it shortly, so who cares even more!)

166 - New England Defense

167 - Arizona Defense

168 - Chris Simms - QB - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Fifteenth Round:

169 - Minnesota Defense

170 - Jason Hanson - K - Detroit Lions

171 - Rian Lindell - K - Buffalo Bills

172 - Olindo Mare - K - Miami Dolphins (Seth's Pick - a second kicker. Probably will also be dropped.)

173 - Phil Dawson - K - Cleveland Browns

174 - San Diego Defense

175 - Buffalo Defense

176 - Cincinnati Defense

177 - John Carney - K - New Orleans Saints

178 - Kansas City Defense

179 - St. Louis Defense

180 - Detroit Defense
