Spring Training Q&A

with Danny Santiesteban

The second in our series of Spring Training Q&As is with outfielder Danny Santiesteban. The Miami native will turn 22 next week. He had a very solid 2006 season with the Elizabethton Twins. There, he hit .250/.328/.398 with 14 doubles, six homers and 30 RBI. Despite the low average, he did put up a lot of extra base hits, which at that level is very important. Just as important, he is known already as a great defensive centerfielder. Last week when I previewed the Twins organization by position and was looking at the outfielders, I projected that Santiesteban would skip Low A ball and play in Ft. Myers. I guess we shall see. That will be determined in Spring Training.

I had a more detailed Q&A with Danny Santiesteban back in October. Please check it out again if you missed it before. The following are his thoughts as the 2007 season quickly approaches:

SethSpeaks: 2006 was a season of ups and downs for you in Elizabethton. Overall, how do you feel about your 2006 season?

Danny Santiesteban: Yes, there were ups and downs, but average-wise, but other than that I had my doubles and homers and rbi's which is the name of the game, rbi's.

SethSpeaks: How has your off-season been? Did you jump right into an off-season workout routine, or were you able to get away from baseball for a little while?

Danny Santiesteban: Well, when I got back I took sometime off. I started back up on October 12th and haven't stopped since. Been trying to add some pounds, and I have gained 20 pounds of muscle.

SethSpeaks: Tell us a little bit about your workout routine.

Danny Santiesteban: Get up like at 7 in the morning, head to the University of Miami and practice, then come back home, go workout and condition 3 times a week. and, eat 6 times a day; before practice, and after, then before workout, and then after, then two more times.

SethSpeaks: Here is a very open-ended questions, but... What does Spring Training mean to you?

Danny Santiesteban: Means a lot; get use to seeing pitchers, and try to perform so you can start at the level you would like.

SethSpeaks: When are you heading to Ft. Myers for spring training and when does it officially start?

Danny Santiesteban: Well, I am leaving February 13, and it officially starts in March 8.

SethSpeaks: Do you feel physically and mentally ready for the upcoming season?

Danny Santiesteban: Yes, I am stronger and have a couple of pounds, and mentally, I am focused.

SethSpeaks: Heading into camp, what are your hopes and expectations for camp and where would you like to start the '07 campaign?

Danny Santiesteban: Well, to be healthy and have a good spring training, and I would like to start where ever they want me too. I am ready to go.

SethSpeaks: Have you set any goals for yourself for the 2007 season?

Danny Santiesteban: Just to be healthy and give it all I got, leave it all on the field. That's all I could ask for, and what I could control. Don't want to think about stuff that I can't.

A big thank you to Danny for taking some of his time to answer these questions. Obviously we wish him the best of luck in 2007!

Please remember, these Spring Training Q&As will be posted as I receive them. So, be sure to check back. Please leave Comments or follow-up questions that I can take back to Danny for response. Thank you, and enjoy the rest of your day!
